ADHD Consultation & Management
ADHD in Children and Adolescents
Dr. Susan Sankari of Twenty First Century Pediatrics, has clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in both children and adolescents.
Diagnosing ADHD is an inexact science -- not because it is unsupported, but because of who is doing the diagnosing. It’s important you have a pediatrician, like Dr. Sankari, who understands all of the nuances of the disorder and has a solid comprehension of the criteria used to establish the diagnosis and treatment.
To help pediatricians diagnose ADHD more effectively, the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued new guidelines that address public concerns about misdiagnosis. Between 4 and 12 percent of schoolchildren are believed to have ADHD -- many of whom have it but never get diagnosed. Others who don’t have it are being diagnosed and treated incorrectly.
Diagnosing and treating ADHD requires an ability to identify and distinguish behaviors that can be subtle and complicated. With a thorough evaluation and repeat office visits and observations, Dr. Sankari is able to provide an accurate diagnosis and successful treatment plan for your child that also works for you and your family. If she feels it necessary, Dr. Sankari will refer your child to a specialist in the field who can assist in clarifying the diagnosis.
The behaviors attached to ADHD affect not only the child but also the caregiver/parent. That’s why Dr. Sankari works one-on-one with parents to educate, inform, and also ease their mind with resources that will help identify, relate, and cope with ADHD on a daily basis.
